Winter in the West

I try to get in one big winter trip, every year, just to remember what a proper frost feels like. It’s not long now until I’m off on the next one, back out into the winter in the western highlands. Here are a few more shots from last time, when the sky was clear and the ground was covered in frost. This time, it sounds rather more like it’ll be hiking through snowstorms…

P1000968

Looking back to Bridge of Orchy, and the heights of Beinn Dorain. The mountain walls off the old pagan shrine of the Tigh-nam-Bodach from the well-travelled valley below.

P1000971

Glen Kinglass, with its old woods and its new woods, and the Etive mountains behind it.

P1000988

Looking back to the Lyon hills, over the woodlands that fringe Loch Tulla.

P1010021

Following the Old Military Road over Rannoch Moor.

P1010054

Glen Etive from the mountain pass of the Lairig Gartain, stretching off into the distance.

P1010069

The Etive River, lined by frost.

Looking back, this trip created so many amazing images. It’s partly the place, and partly the luck of the weather; winter seldom sees such blue skies in this part of the world. Fingers crossed fortune will favour us again, this time…

Why, thank you. To be honest, the landscape did all the work itself. A monkey with the ability to push a button would been able to produce a passable photo – I just happened to be the monkey fortunate enough to be there at the time πŸ™‚

    You’re kidding, right? Regarding snowstorms?

That’s what was happening last week. Having just checked however, the forecast is actually looking up. Light winds, light snow, temperatures of -1 to -8. Fine weather for a stroll πŸ™‚

Beautiful enough to entice even me into the cold! I hope your excursion is awesome; I’m quite envious of your imminent escape.

When – I don’t know. I’m sure I’ll be off to some strange place by summer. Where – top choice is Mongolia!
